Alrighty, I've published the gallery of Church Boyz Mural shots. The ones toward the end are pretty dramatic, I like them a lot. For many of these shots I went hand-held with my Speedlight for great effects. I did this simply by using a long PC-sync cord from the camera to the strobe. With the flash on axis with the camera, meaning that the flash is very close to the camera and pointing the same direction as the lens, we end up with very flat light. The more you move the flash off-axis the more texture you start to bring out in your subject due to the creation of shadows that are now visible by the camera. For the shots that make it look like the mural has massive canyons in it I had the flash almost flush with the canvas. At this hard of an angle just a tiny adjustment makes a huge difference in what you capture. I also played with focal length and how far I moved the flash away from the center of my subject, this gave me some cool selective lighting. Those things combined with the hard light from the bare flash head gave me very distinct and eye catching images that really compliment what the artist was painting. I wish I could write more about the technical side of camera settings and what was going through my mind while setting up these shots, but alas I must go edit pictures from my latest gig which I call "Adorable Baby." Well, no, that's not really what I call it. It didn't actually have a name, but this little kid was uncommonly cute and well behaved for 8 weeks old. Lucky for you I will post a few of my favorites someday kinda soon. Also, I've started sorting through my pictures of Spokane, WA and publishing a few of the pretty ones. Some boring, some fun, but all Spokane. More to come! |
